Equus Health Spearmint – 1kg
Spearmint is the herb that earns its keep on a yard where somebody will not eat. Equus Health call it simply irresistible, and describe it as a food appetiser that can tempt the fussiest feeders and brighten up a plain feed — which is exactly the job it is bought for in most cases.
The second use is the gut. Equus Health say it supports the digestive system, particularly in horses prone to gassy colic, crib biting and windsucking. At the published 20g a day, this 1kg pack runs for about seven weeks, which makes it the size for a horse that is going to stay on it.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 100% dried spearmint, one ingredient and nothing else.
- Fed as a food appetiser to tempt fussy feeders.
- Brightens up an otherwise plain feed.
- Equus Health link it to support for the digestive system.
- Named by them for horses prone to gassy colic, crib biting and windsucking.
- Its strong scent also helps mask a less palatable supplement fed in the same bucket.
Suitable For
- Fussy feeders that leave the bucket half full.
- Horses on a plain, low-interest ration that needs something to lift it.
- Horses prone to gassy colic, or that crib bite and windsuck.
- Owners feeding it daily and long term, where the 1kg is the more economical pack.
- Not for a mare in foal without veterinary advice — Equus Health carry that warning on the product. If the problem is condition rather than appetite, Equus Health Fenugreek Seeds is the herb aimed at that.
Feeding
- Horses and ponies: approximately 20g daily.
- Equus Health give the same rate as two and a half 50ml scoops daily.
- One published rate covers horses and ponies, with no separate figure by height or bodyweight.
- Stir through the feed rather than sprinkling on top, so the scent runs through the whole bucket.
- 1kg at 20g a day is about 50 days for one horse.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: 100% spearmint. 1kg pack.
- No carriers, sweeteners, added vitamins or added minerals.
- Equus Health publish no typical analysis for this herb, so no protein, oil, fibre, sugar or ash figures are stated here.
Care & Caution
- Seek veterinary advice before feeding to pregnant mares. This is Equus Health's own published warning.
- Spearmint makes a feed more attractive; it does not make an unsuitable feed suitable. A horse that has suddenly gone off its food needs looking at, not disguising.
- Equus Health publish no competition status for spearmint. Check the current FEI, BHA and British Eventing rules yourself before feeding it to a competing horse.
